Liberia was the first Democratic republic in the continent of Africa. Made of many indigenous cultures, it was populated by important American-born black colonists in the early nineteenth century. President and Mrs. Carter visited Liberia in 1978, on the first official visit of a U.S. President to Africa. Though its recent history includes fourteen years of Civil War, Liberiaís 2005 election brought the continentís first female president, Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf, to help maintain her nationís most lasting peace.
Liberia is a country of hundreds of ethnic groups boasting an array of traditional and artistic skills. Some Liberian societies make masks, some create carpets, and others weave textiles.
