After his defeat in 1966, Jimmy Carter began careful planning for the 1970 governor’s race. Carter’s campaign motto was “Bring Out the Best in Georgia.” With the help of family and organized volunteers, he took his message to the people.

Campaigning all over the state, he asked voters to support his ideas for ending unfair taxes, government waste and runaway spending. Jimmy Carter was elected the 76th Governor of Georgia. He represented a new spirit in the South as he proclaimed in his Inaugural Address: "I say to you quite frankly that the time for racial discrimination is over."
