In 1966, near the end of his second term in the Georgia senate, Jimmy Carter decided to seek election to the U.S. House of Representatives. When his Republican opponent withdrew from the contest to run for governor, Carter’s congressional seat seemed assured. Unwilling to accept a Republican governor, Georgia Democrats persuaded Jimmy Carter to run instead for governor. With only three months until the statewide Democratic primary, Carter campaigned throughout Georgia. But when the votes were in, Jimmy ran third. Disappointed, he vowed to win the governorship in 1970.
