Rosalynn Carter’s meeting with Brazilian President Ernesto Geisel was the most challenging of her trip.

Two issues made up the agenda: U.S. opposition to Brazil purchase of a nuclear reprocessing plant and reports of human rights violations. While no immediate resolution was achieved, the first lady’s trip demonstrated U.S. interest in future negotiations.
